When I first saw this my immediate thought was this must be the doings of the red chested cuckoo. Have always been fascinated by the idea of brood parasitism so I decided to dig a little deeper just to be sure. You know, stuff like get to find out the host bird that had fallen victim to this brutal act, the size and color of the eggs they lay etc. My first and only guess as regards the host was the white browed robin chat because these too habit the place and are known to frequently fall victim to the red chested cuckoo’s cunning ways. But something didn’t add up, the nest these guys had fallen from was nothing close to what a robin chat would nest in. A little more digging and what I discovered surprised me even more. The house sparrow. Yes, you read right. The house sparrow. This gentle looking bundle of harmless feathers is actually one of nature’s most brutal home wreckers…literally. In short two house sparrow lovers went out looking for a home and decided to invade the most convenient nest, evacuated the occupants (the chicks who were most likely home alone at the time) making sure they were dead in the process before they happily settled in…the 4 metre fall was hard to survive considering the landing was hard concrete floor…and to think this was probably done by a relative…SICK! Parents should have stayed locked down I guess.
